The artists who are invited to SUMU residence by the support of the Nordic Culture Point 2009
Ellen Sofie Griegel
Ellen Sofie Griegel was born in 1975, Trondheim, Norway. She recieved her Master of Fine Art in 2007 from Bergen National Academy of the Arts.
She lives and work in Trondheim and during the last two years she has mainly worked with interactive light-installations. In addition, she also work in the field of video, drawing and performative actions.
She is interrested in communication, motion and material, and intrigued with how we experience the world in which we are living.
The project 'Myriagon' shown at Gallery Titanic/ Sonic Sunrises (3-13/12 2009), is in continuation with the project 'Tule Lähemmäs/ Come Closer' , developed during my six week recidency period in Turku/SUMU jan/febr 2009.
In the 'Myriagon' project I've replaced motion-sensors and led-lights with small speakers/sound and projection/light.
In geometry a myriagon is a polygon with ten-thousand sides, and in 'Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions', Chief Circle is refered to as a myriagon. This is one of the main characters who enlightens our perception of the world.
The installation consists of a large projected paper-sphere, and sound through miniature speakers. The images used for projection is originally shifting sunlight through a window, and the sound is recordings of breath.

1.10. – 31.10.2009 in SUMU
Janna Holmstedt, Sweden

Janna Holmstedt’s work is conceptual and often narrative in form. It involves image, text, sound, installations and interventions, as well
as collaborative and web based projects. In her work, questions related to identity and the different strategies we acquire to define ourselves in relation to others and our environs are repeatedly explored. She
often use voice-overs in combination with moving images – or constructed situations – to create multi-layered narratives. The
stories told, fictional and documentary, are related to what you see,
but also the situation you are in while listening. At SUMU she will
produce a audio-visual installation, based on a phenomenon called
”Environmental Dependency Syndrome”.
Holmstedt lives in Stockholm.

Richard Widerberg is a sound and media artist living in Gothenburg Sweden. He is in his work investigating the physical, spatial andlocative dimensions of sound, listening and environment. Related to his sonic works are works that deal with mobility, interaction and social exchange. Richard is also an active musician and develops and plays with new musical interfaces. He is an active member of the Gothenburg based Dånk! collective who organizes projects and events around sound, music and technology. During the Sumu residency he will develop his Sunrisescape project which simply is sonifications of sunrises.

Ursula Nistrup is a visual artist working with sound, architecture and acoustics.
She has initiated several collaborations with musicians, architects and people working in the field of human behavior. Each individual project or collaboration aims in challenging the boundaries of human perception, as a way to reconsider the spaces we occupy, and highlight the relationship between sound, architecture, and social process.
Nistrup's conceptual approach can be seen as an organized inquiry into the aesthetics of sound.
The work she will be developing during the SUMU residency will take as a starting point the city of Turku and therefore the final project will not be known till relations closely considered by the artist disclose themselves through the residency period.
She is based in Copenhagen and Los Angeles.
